Tips and guilds
Don't ever
guess how a word is pronounced ! if you are not sure
about the pronunciation , look it up in this program or
the dictionary . The rules offered in this program are
to help you remember the pronunciation, Note : the rules
are guides . There are always exceptions.

English is a hard language to
learn . You have to persevere and not get frustrated .
Practice , practice and practice .

You should
diligently practice the vowel sounds, they are one of
the most important parts of speaking English.

Listen to how native English
speakers prounce because they slide the sounds
together in words such as apples and oranges , the "d"
sound in the "and" slides into the "o" of orange

Always try to break long words into
several syllables

Speak slowly , don't rush yourself
. Speaking fast never impresses your listener. In fact ,
your listeners may ignore you if they can't understand
you

If you can't speak English fluently
, try to make your sentences short

Ask your native English-speaking
friends to correct you. Or record what you say , and
listen to yourself.

Watch educational TV programs such
as PBS's "between the lions "

Watch out for the schwa sound ! it
is everywhere and takes the place of all vowels as ago ,
agent , pencil , atom , and circus

Since English is a lingua franca (
Latin-based ) , learning the roots of the words will
help you with your pronunciation

Do you know that the letter "y"
has three different sounds ? , they are the long "i"
sound in fly,
the long "e" sound in baby , and the short "i" sound in
lyric.

Sometimes Americans like to
pronounce the letter t as the letter d , don't be
confused.

Do you know that besides A, E, I ,
O , and U , sometimes Y is also considered a vowel as in
the words bay and lily?

Knowing where the stress is , you
can figure out that the unstressed vowel is pronounced
as the "schwa "sound or the short "i" sound

Do you know that the "a" sound and
"e" sound in the words "bad" and "bed" last longer than
in the words "bat" and "bet" ?
it is because the final consonant "" is a voiced
consonant and "" is a voiceless consonants

The first thing to learn about
English is the alphabet . Make sure you can say it , so
you can at least spell words to your listener , if they
can't understand you .
